Top 5 Chinese Youtube Clones + 1

Here is my list of top 5 Chinese youtube clones, but make sure you stay tuned till the end, because the +1 is a real gem! The neato thing about most of these sites is that they can host shared/stolen content for everyone to enjoy/report.
Note: I’m not endorsing these sites, I’m just trying to make the barrier between the eastern and western internet a little bit more transparent.

So here are the top 5, according to the gospel of panda:

5. mofile.com

A lot of web-cammery, a decent tags section, these guys break my top 5 — even though I haven’t used them too much. Looks good though, as you can see from this White Stripes Video?Seven Nation Army:

4. 6rooms.com

You can find some stuff on here, but it’s more difficult than some of the other sites. I’m usually not too impressed with them, but I am today. They earn my 4-spot, mostly because they have Spiderman 3 online! (Click here to see) Poor quality, but what do ya expect?
Note: Sony claims that they “have so far found no pirated copies of Spider-Man 3 on the Internet” (thx Imagethief), but I guess that “so far” is done with as of now.
Here’s a sample:

3. 56.com

56.com is pretty youtubie, with lots of homemade videos and people lipsyncing in front of their webcam. There are a number of movies and tv shows, as well as music and sports.
Here’s the 2007 NBA All Star Game, Part 1 and Part 2. And here’s a sample to view in the player:

2. tudou.com

Tudou is the oldest of all the Chinese video sites, starting up in 2005. Layout seems very similar to youtube, and ease of use is quite good (maybe because it’s a familiar layout?). Because tudou has been going for so long, there’s already a good base of users, and a good base of videos posted. Here’s a sample movie, Xmen 3 (indexed, and continuous play). And a sample for viewing in via the embedded player:

1. youku.com

This site’s domain used to be yuqoo.com, but I guess they decided to change it for some reason or another. I wonder why? In anycase, despite their resemblance to youtube, I’m crowning youku the king of Chinese internet video sites. It’s ease of use, and blistering speed puts youtube to shame. And it seems to be the only Chinese video site with a user base that can rival tudou. And because of that, you can find almost any media on there. Here’s Season one of Heroes (indexed) and episodes played continuously back to back. And here’s a sample of the player:

…and now time for the +1.

Not a youtube clone, but the Winner is:

Mojiti.com!

This is one of the cooler video sites to come out in a long time, period. It’s actually not a video site itself, but it allows you to bring in videos from other sites (such as youtube, youku, tudou, etc.) and annotate that video in various ways. You can add links, subtitles, pop-up video bubbles, whatever you want. Here’s a sample video, that basically shows all the stuff they got in their repetoire:

Pretty amazing, eh?

For more information on the video sites in China, be sure to check out danwei and China Web Review. Or you can check out my blog posts categorized, appropriately enough, China Stolen Media. Or just scroll to the blue box at the bottom of every post. :)

Not a Chinese site, but expats may enjoy Veoh. They have full movies and all sorts of videos. No pop ups or ads, but you have to download their ‘player’, I haven’t encountered any problems. Check it out at:

    Hope you guys enjoy!

Nice article, some of those sites are actually pretty good!

  3. Youtube can be considered one of the most successful business ventures on the internet today. It is just normal for a company to duplicate a hot item especially if you are going to present it to a more focused market.

These chinese youtube clones really know how to get some market.

    Thanks for your post.

If you have time, why don’t you drop by my post:

  • What a PSP Phone may look like March 15, 2010
Some interesting images are emerging from a Chinese website M8cool.com. Apparently patience is not one of the virtues of the shanzhai (loosely meaning, imitation) industry, as they love to kick out early prototypes and images of not-yet-released gadgets. The latest one of these is the PSP Phone.  […]

  • Human-Powered Washing Machine March 15, 2010
What do you get when you cross a treadmill with a washing machine? Give up? Something that looks a little like this, actually. A kid by the name of Zhang Jiayu from the northeastern Liaoning province thought that conventional washing machines wasted far too much electricity. He then had the bright idea of creating one that was powered by a man running on top […]

  • China Says Goodbye to Google With Cartoons March 15, 2010
Since Google announced that they would no longer continue to censor in China, pretty much everybody has assumed that they won't be able to remain in the country. That may turn out to be the case. I'm not going to speculate too much on the issue, because there's way more than enough being said already. In the midst of all that headache, I do wa […]

  • China ice sculpture tragically made entirely from beer March 15, 2010
The city of Harbin in northern China is widely known for it's freeze-your-snowballs-off temperatures and it's annual ice festival. Domestically, the city is also known for it's beer. Sadly, some wiseguy decided to combine the two to create a ginormous ice sculpture with nothing more than copious amounts of frozen beer. Such a waste... […]

  • China has system to detect vulgar Karaoke March 15, 2010
Chinahush has a great write-up about a controversial new karaoke content management system being rolled out in Zhengzhou. The 'Black Box' (as it has been nicknamed) will flash red lights and alert the police when someone selects a vulgar song. Naturally, many netizens in China are voicing questions about such a system: […]

  • China's xpPhone to be upgraded to Win7Phone? March 15, 2010
The Chinese xpPhone was itself thought to be a rumor until engadget China reported on it last month. Sadly, it looks like this monstrosity does indeed exist. And what's more, it looks like it might soon be upgrading to Windows 7. Nevermind that the real Windows 7 Mobile won't be coming out until late next year. As usual, China has us covered with t […]

  • Best Chinese Knockoff Ever? Sony VAIC TT March 15, 2010
There's something ingenius about taking an 'O' and making it a 'C.'  It's so subtle. So clever. It boggles the mind with possibilities: Orec cookies anyone? Maybe a little Cvaltine to wash it down?  Ok, maybe not. But that's generally the idea behind this 'Viac' 'Vaic,' a shanzhai version of the tiny Son […]

  • More Chinese Farmer Innovations: Baby Buddha Pears! March 15, 2010
If you're a regular reader of this blog, you're likely familiar with the unusual phenomenon of inventive Chinese farmers. For some reason, these rural inventors are grabbing more headlines than most Chinese tech companies. Well, here's another distinguished farmer to follow in that tradition. This particular pear producer isn't going to l […]
