Prison Break Hero to scale Great Wall, Greet Fans

Wentworth Miller, better known as Michael Schofield on the hugely popular TV series Prison Break, has been invited to China, and is expected to be here in June:

The Shanghai-based News Times reported Wentworth Miller as having been invited by Zhongbo Media Group, who have bought the rights from Fox to shoot an online video adaptation of the American hit TV drama.

In an interview with the paper, an official of Zhongbo said that Miller is coming to promote the Chinese version of Prison Break, and will take part in some commercial activities. Miller is also invited to act as a final judge to select actors for the Chinese Prison Break. Source: Xinhua

Prison Break has gained an enormous following here in China. What Xinhua neglected to mention is that Prison Break’s amazing popularity has spread almost exclusively through piracy. Fake DVDs and VCDs of Prison Break widely available, and even after the recent so-called DVD crackdown.

But nevermind the DVDs, Prison Break’s main means of escaping copyright into the Middle Kingdom is the Chinese internet:

And that’s just for starters… There are tons of other video sites out there also hosting Prison Break full seasons. Not lousy 2 minute youtube clips. Full seasons.

I wonder what Fox Broadcasting has to say about that? Would they take a similar posture as they have with youtube and other American (so-called) copyright outlaws?

In any case, they seem to be willing to overlook it long enough to bring star Wentworth Miller into China, to help promote a 200 minute online Chinese adaptation of Prison Break, which Zhongbo Media licensed from Fox for $1.2 Million US.

You mean, the Government is behind all this?

Another interesting question is raised by all this hoopla. Prison Break’s plot is focused around conspiracies and corrupt/evil government officials. Could a Chinese version possibly be bold enough to include such a plotline?

Apparently no such luck:

Zhongbo Media Chief Chen Weiming says the Chinese language remake will have more plotlines on top of the original storyline and characters. The movie will encompass a well-known computer virus case from last year. A large IT company will be one of the bad guys in the adaptation, instead of the Vice President and the FBI in the American version.

Maybe they wanted to be original

As for me, I’m mostly just curious as to how they translate T-Bag into Chinese!

  1. You posted a Heroes link on Lost Laowai a few months ago, using Tudou. I know because I’m entirely hooked on the show. This looks like a bit better quality.

  2. admin says:

    Ah, that’s where it was…
    Thanks Chris.

I’m still amazed at how much faster these sites are than youtube.
    It’s nuts.

  3. I can’t remember where I read it, but it would be funny if Wentworth (honestly, who names their kid that?) happened into one of the clinics here that was using his image (I assume unknowingly) to promote some health issue.

  4. admin says:

    Yeah, really.
They may as well have called him T-bag!

  9. I’m a huge prison break fan, it’s something I look forward to every Monday. It’s really amazing to see that other people across the world from me have the same interests in the incredible acting, storyline, and plot. I think i’ll even watch the Chinese version when it comes out ;D

  • What a PSP Phone may look like March 17, 2010
Some interesting images are emerging from a Chinese website M8cool.com. Apparently patience is not one of the virtues of the shanzhai (loosely meaning, imitation) industry, as they love to kick out early prototypes and images of not-yet-released gadgets. The latest one of these is the PSP Phone.  […]

  • Human-Powered Washing Machine March 17, 2010
What do you get when you cross a treadmill with a washing machine? Give up? Something that looks a little like this, actually. A kid by the name of Zhang Jiayu from the northeastern Liaoning province thought that conventional washing machines wasted far too much electricity. He then had the bright idea of creating one that was powered by a man running on top […]

  • China Says Goodbye to Google With Cartoons March 17, 2010
Since Google announced that they would no longer continue to censor in China, pretty much everybody has assumed that they won't be able to remain in the country. That may turn out to be the case. I'm not going to speculate too much on the issue, because there's way more than enough being said already. In the midst of all that headache, I do wa […]

  • China ice sculpture tragically made entirely from beer March 17, 2010
The city of Harbin in northern China is widely known for it's freeze-your-snowballs-off temperatures and it's annual ice festival. Domestically, the city is also known for it's beer. Sadly, some wiseguy decided to combine the two to create a ginormous ice sculpture with nothing more than copious amounts of frozen beer. Such a waste... […]

The Chinese xpPhone was itself thought to be a rumor until engadget China reported on it last month. Sadly, it looks like this monstrosity does indeed exist. • Best Chinese Knockoff Ever? Sony VAIC TT March 17, 2010
There's something ingenius about taking an 'O' and making it a 'C.'  It's so subtle. So clever. It boggles the mind with possibilities: Orec cookies anyone? Maybe a little Cvaltine to wash it down?  Ok, maybe not. But that's generally the idea behind this 'Viac' 'Vaic,' a shanzhai version of the tiny Son […]
