I mentioned this briefly in my CNet Asia 2007 wrap-up, but I thought I’d mention it here as well. Hats off to Time for catching this one so quick.
In a nutshell, CCTV5 was holding a ceremony to announce their new name, The Olympic Channel. In attendance was TV host, Hu Ziwei, who is the wife of well known sports anchor Zhang Bin.
But all hell broke out when Hu Ziwei took the mic. Here’s a translation of what she said, with the videos to follow:
From Time:
Today is a special day for The Olympic Channel, and a special day for Mr. Zhang Bin, and for me too. Because just two hours ago, I found out that besides me, Mr. Zhang Bin has been maintaining an improper relationship with another woman … Next year is an Olympic year, and all eyes will be watching China. But as a French diplomat once pointed out, if Chinese people don’t have any humane values to present to the world … then what does all the fuss mean?
More text from Youtube viewer comments, and tidied up a bit by myself:
[to the man trying to usher her off] Is this how you treat a woman? Get off me.
Here is a superficial man who can not even face himself and his deep-hurt wife.
So how can China become a superpower country?
You all have a nice holiday.
Bin and I will not.

2To answer her question, nobody faces themselves, or their wives, after a few years of marriage. China can only be a superpower when people learn to cheat discretely, like in France.
