CNet Asia: A few of my recent posts

I’m still writing regularly over at CNet Asia, so feel free to drop over and check it out. Here are a couple of my latests posts:

CNet Asia: China Snow Job, Tech Reading List, and more

For anyone who’s missed it, here are my last few posts over at CNet Asia. The most recent two have touched on China’s recent snow problems, and lets hope that all that mess gets sorted out pronto.

For anyone who wants to stay on top of my posts over here, you can subscribe here via RSS.

Happy New Year everybody!

CNet Asia: Kicking it up a notch in ‘08

After having a wonderful feed of pancakes and beans a while back with Chris just before new year, I decided that my new years’ resolution would be to try to put a little more effort into my CNet posts. Nothing like a breakfast heavy on beans to inject you with a newfound sense of urgency, I always say.

Apparently I need some new sayings… :)

While I’m by no means killing myself writing these, I did enjoy setting aside some time for some lengthier-than-usual posts on CNet. Check it out: Read the rest of this entry »

CNet Asia: Guerilla Translating, Google vs Baidu

I haven’t been posting too much recently, as during the holidays… well, there are just more important things to do. :) I have put a few posts up on CNet Asia however, so you might want to drop over and check it out. Or feel free to subscribe via RSS.

Guerilla Translating in China, a Labor of Love

This was a fun post to write. I spoke to a girl who translates a Nintendo RPG as a hobby, and found that China essentially has a huge translation army who hang out on forums, translating games, and whipping up subtitles for movies and TV dramas. Turns out that this volunteer army is way more efficient than any professional translating company could ever be!

5 Goog-tastic reasons I’m betting against Baidu in ‘08

Baidu Schmaidu… Nobody innovates like Google. Period. I don’t care how much of the Chinese search market share Baidu has. Much like this guy, I’m expecting Google to kick it into high gear in China in the new year. Read the rest of this entry »

CNet Podcast: Interview with Tudou CEO Gary Wang

This past Friday, I had the opportunity to interview Gary Wang, the founder of mammoth video sharing site Tudou.com. The site is arguably bigger than youtube, not just in China, but in terms of comparative data transfer and minutes of video streamed.

Anyone who follows this site knows that I’m a big fan of Chinese video sites. I’m especially a fan of user 24jack these days!

In any case, the interview with Gary was my first go at a podcast, and overall (aside from my voice sounding like a cross between Ben Stein and Beavis) I think it went quite well. Gary’s an interesting guy, and Tudou is without question an intriguing site. We chatted about everything from copyright to censorship to copycat websites, and more besides.

So if you’d like to check the interview, drop on over to CNet and check it out.

Recently on CNet: Blackberry in China, Stealth Rainjacket, and Censorship (again)

A couple of posts from my other blog over at CNet asia:

Blackberry: It’s the New Opium!
It’s official, Blackberry’s coming to China. I think it’ll be big. Check out this article to see why. Arguably my favorite post-title ever!

Look out Harry Potter: China Develops Invisibility Cloak
File under B for Bizarre. This turbo-charged rain-jacket is damn cool if it turns out to be the real thing. Not sure how far stealth technology has advanced in China, but if this video is the real deal – well, that’s way cool.

Censored: The Harmony Papers
A pdf report released from Reporters without Borders gives an inside look at internet censorship on China. Ironically, but not unexpectically, the report has cannot be viewed in China. Though I did provide an alternate means of downloading it.

CNet: Real Transformer, iPhones in China, and Arse-technica

Been a bit busy on CNet posting these days. Here’s a quick summary of a flurry of posts I’ve done recently:

Chinese dudes build full-size Transformer

Some Chinese guys down in Nanjing went and built a full size Transformer. It’s insane!
In the comments, reader Xiaoxiong points to some interesting videos, one of a fully functioning, but miniature Japanese Transformer, and as well to some guys who made some impressive Transformer costumes. Halloween’s coming! Anyone want to try?

Here is one of the videos that I didn’t quite have space to put in the CNet post:

China: iPhone? I don’t see no iPhone

Some sightings of functioning iPhones in China, and my close encounter with one at an Apple store.

Tainted report recall: Arstechnica, BoingBoing, Techcrunch, Slashdot–ALL GUILTY!

A quick summary of how many of the world’s most reputatble tech-websites incorrectly reported a blanket ban on all RSS in China.
