One of the things that struck me when I initially came to China was how many wrinkly old men were walking around with far younger – and not-so-wrinkly – women on their arms.
While this happens, of course, in all cultures, it seems that China is far more accepting of sizable age gaps than most western countries are.
Here is a video that I just found on youku which show many famous couples, most of whom are comprised of a very old man, and a much younger, beautiful woman. I should note that not all of these examples are Chinese, there are some foreigners in there as well.
Who knows? Maybe the fact that this video is popular reflects a change in Chinese attitudes towards this situation? Is a ten or twenty year age gap more curious than it once was?
Just came across this old cartoon on the front page of youku. While I’ve not watched it all yet (it’s over 70 mins long!), I thought it was worth posting for sure. It’s not Disney by any stretch, but it’s worth a look.
It’s called ????, which I think translates into “Iron Princess” (someone correct me if I’m wrong, the ? character is new to me). I stand corrected: ???? is iron-fan princess.
Update: Thanks to Bill for recommending another old Chinese cartoon:
???? from 1960’s is awesome. probably the best of Chinese cartoon, recent cartoons couldn’t get closer. It won a bog award in Czech movie/cartoon festival in the 60’s
Just a quick update for you guys. Me and Rika took off from Dalian Friday morning. I’m somewhere over Halifax right now, so don’t even ask me how long ago that was. I think it was about 24 hours ago, though the international date line has me all fracked up as always…
China Airlines was typical. The plane smelled like burning oil on take off, and when in landed in Tokyo it hit the runway like a shotput. As soon as we hit Tokyo airport, I was taken aback every time I had to queue for something, as there’s always an attendant who’ll walk down the line and see how you’re doing. Brilliant. I still have a bag full o’ bagels from Narita airport which my brothers will likely inhale as soon as I see them at the airport. F@ck. Japan is awesome.
Newark airport looked cool, but we had no time fo’ nuthin’. They had a Miller beer place, and a Sam Adams place – and I was dying for a beer after the Tokyo-New York flight. But I had to content myself with multiple vodka-tonic & limes on the NY – St.John’s flight. I swear ta gawd this jet is so damn tiny. I can stretch my arms out and nearly touch both sides of it. 3 seats plus an alley wide. Damn tiny.
Update: Home now. Relaxing with the old dog. This is Missy. Some 10+ years old.
Just finished out my 20s yesterday. I was looking at my old passport photo below, and couldn’t help but miss my old bouncy hair. Well, I suppose it still bounces after it falls out and then hits the floor.
I’m heading home to Newfoundland the day after tomorrow for about 10 days. Short stops in Tokyo and New York as well.
Wednesday, March 17, 2010 00:00 – 19:33 Or Guinness Day, will be on 17th March. I noticed that in Beijing they're celebrating by having a Guinness price war, with several bars cutting the 60 Yuan plus drink to 30 Yuan. That's about wholesale price when accounting for a little wastage. What's happening in Dalian? […]
