I just came across this article in BusinessWeek about Mozilla’s efforts to promote Firefox in China. Featuring Mobinode/Netvibes Gang Lu among others, I encourage you to check this one out: Mozilla takes on Microsoft in China
My favorite quote from the piece was this one:
Li Gong recalls visiting one software company that supplies Linux to Chinese government agencies and noticing an IE icon on the computer desktop. When he asked the programmer why they installed IE on Linux, they told him that it was actually Firefox. “Our users don’t know what Firefox is, but they know this button is Internet,” says Gong. “So they overlay the IE button on top of the Firefox icon.”
After having a wonderful feed of pancakes and beans a while back with Chris just before new year, I decided that my new years’ resolution would be to try to put a little more effort into my CNet posts. Nothing like a breakfast heavy on beans to inject you with a newfound sense of urgency, I always say.
Apparently I need some new sayings…
While I’m by no means killing myself writing these, I did enjoy setting aside some time for some lengthier-than-usual posts on CNet. Check it out: Read the rest of this entry »
Some of you may have seen this before, but I hadn’t seen it yet so I figured I’d go for it.
Bruce Lee’s stylish mannerisms may have contributed to his fame as much as his martial arts skill. And here is a baby who’s parents apparently have him in early training.
I mentioned this briefly in my CNet Asia 2007 wrap-up, but I thought I’d mention it here as well. Hats off to Time for catching this one so quick.
In a nutshell, CCTV5 was holding a ceremony to announce their new name, The Olympic Channel. In attendance was TV host, Hu Ziwei, who is the wife of well known sports anchor Zhang Bin.
But all hell broke out when Hu Ziwei took the mic. Here’s a translation of what she said, with the videos to follow:
From Time:
Today is a special day for The Olympic Channel, and a special day for Mr. Zhang Bin, and for me too. Because just two hours ago, I found out that besides me, Mr. Zhang Bin has been maintaining an improper relationship with another woman … Next year is an Olympic year, and all eyes will be watching China. But as a French diplomat once pointed out, if Chinese people don’t have any humane values to present to the world … then what does all the fuss mean?
More text from Youtube viewer comments, and tidied up a bit by myself:
[to the man trying to usher her off] Is this how you treat a woman? Get off me.
Here is a superficial man who can not even face himself and his deep-hurt wife.
So how can China become a superpower country?
You all have a nice holiday.
Bin and I will not. Read the rest of this entry »
I recently wrote about Hong Laowai over on CNet Asia. This “Red Foreigner” had been getting quite a bit of attention on the Chinese internet by singing old Chinese songs, very often doing so bare-chested for some reason.
His latest release is definitely a step up from those. He’s kickin’ it Korea style, and apparently now has a cool little sidekick. Check it out! And stay tuned for the outtakes at the end.
Wednesday, March 17, 2010 00:00 – 19:33 Or Guinness Day, will be on 17th March. I noticed that in Beijing they're celebrating by having a Guinness price war, with several bars cutting the 60 Yuan plus drink to 30 Yuan. That's about wholesale price when accounting for a little wastage. What's happening in Dalian? […]
